Before you start

Have the device in front of you. You will need the identifier from its label, and getting it wrong costs a round trip.
You do not need paperwork yet. If you have the original receipt, good. If not, most people do not, and it does not stop you.
We never ask for the previous owner. Not their password, not their login, not their cooperation.
